
Loraine (Smith) Spangler, formerly of Jonesville, passed away after a long illness in Clearwater, Florida on February 13, 2025.
Loraine was born in Jonesville, Virginia on October 26, 1939, and was a graduate of Flatwoods High School, class of 1958. She lived in Lee County for 29 years during which she worked in her family’s business, Spangler Construction and Building Supply in Pennington Gap, and as a substitute teacher for Lee County Schools. She and her family moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1968.
Loraine was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family fiercely. She was a woman of faith and often a force to be reckoned with. Her many talents included gardening, sewing, and making the world’s best banana pudding and chocolate pie.
Loraine was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, James Ray Spangler; her parents Dewey and Mattie Smith of Jonesville; and her brothers Bobby and Tony Smith of Jonesville and Orlando, Florida.
She is survived by her children Cindy Spangler (Marc) of Dayton, Ohio; Colonel (Retired) James Spangler II (Mona) of Palm Harbor, Florida; Dr. Hope Strickland (Gearld) of Nashville, Tennessee; her grandson James Ray Spangler III (Anneliese) and her great granddaughter Myla Spangler Wolf of Dayton Ohio. She is also survived by her sister Maureen (Smith) Grable (Ralph) of Jonesville and Orlando, Florida, and her brother Dewey Smith (Cynthia) of Leesburg, Florida.
A private memorial service will be held for Loraine.
