David “Roger” Thornton Sr, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2024, at his son David’s home in Lakeland, FL due to lung cancer.  He was born in Lakeland on November 3, 1951, the middle child of 5 born of John Thornton and Lillian Marie Dean. 

He lived most of his life in Auburndale, FL.  Roger held many positions and jobs throughout his life including security officer, school bus driver, laborer and worked various jobs in the citrus industry.  He also had brief stints with Sunbeam Bakery and Piper Aircraft.  Roger was known for an unfiltered sense of humor and love for kids and animals.

In addition to his 4 siblings, he had 2 half siblings, both deceased.  He is survived by his brothers, Gerald and Glen Thornton and sister, Dale Culpepper.  He had two sons, David R Thornton Jr and Christopher Hart, both living, and 6 grandchildren. 


As per his wishes, the family will be holding a private celebration of life. 

The family would like to thank the team at Compassionate Hospice Care for their diligence and support.
